IBM's Project View Recruiting Program

Project View is an IBM recruitment program that focuses on hiring candidates from underrepresented diversity groups. The program annually accounts for 40% to 60% of IBM's college hires from underrepresented groups on a national basis. Last year, Project View Programs included a focused effort in areas like Burlington, Vermont, where diverse talent was needed to fill highly technical positions. The Burlington Project View was successful, with more than two-thirds of the candidates accepting positions of employment. All of the candidates had degrees in engineering or computer science and represented some of the brightest and best talent in the nation. Surveys of our hiring managers indicate that on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 as the highest rating possible, the program consistently comes in with a 1.3 average. Project View Alumni have been promoted into a variety of management, sales and technical positions throughout the nation. Project View was developed in the early 1980s to recruit candidates that would be interested in summer and co-op positions for IBM locations in New York's Mid-Hudson Valley. In 1988, IBM consolidated their recruitment efforts in the Mid-Hudson Valley and expanded Project View to include candidates for regular full-time positions. In the early 1990s, IBM began using this program just for regular, full-time hiring. Since that time, Project View has played a significant role in identifying outstanding competitive candidates from underrepresented diversity groups and providing them with a variety of opportunities that match their skills as well as geographic preferences. IBM is currently hosting Project View Programs that include Black, Native-Americans, Persons with Disabilities, Asian, Latinos and Women. During the last four years, for example, over 80% of IBM's Native-American college hires are Project View Alumni. Project View also has focused on women, who represent a variety of academic backgrounds, and has served them by providing a myriad of employment opportunities with IBM. Overall, Project View provides the IBM management team with a pool of competitive diversity candidates to fill open positions.
