The National Atomic Museum in partnership with Lockheed Martin and Sandia National Laboratories' Hispanic Leadership and Outreach Committee are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a new annual traveling exhibit entitled, "Hispanics in Science." The purpose of the exhibit is 1) to recognize the contributions made by Hispanics in science 2) to provide role models to students 3) to recognize the diversity within the Hispanic community, and 4) to expand the museum's Hispanic audience. This exciting new exhibit will open with a gala ceremony at the National Atomic Museum this fall and after being on display for the Heritage Celebration of 30 days, will begin to travel to universities and communities in New Mexico. Therefore, participation in this annual exhibit will have a broad impact on the entire region. The exhibit will honor the best and brightest Hispanic scientists and engineers across the nation as selected by professional Hispanic organizations such as NAMEPA. It will also recognize Hispanic graduate students who have excelled in their study of science or engineering. Also honored will be Hispanic high school science fair winners. The exhibit will be on display beginning mid September 2001through mid October 2001. The National Atomic Museum was founded in 1969 and chartered by Congress in 1991 as America's museum resource for nuclear science and history. It is one of only a few congressionally chartered museums outside of the Washington D.C. area. Located on Kirtland Air force Base in Albuquerque, NM, it is operated by Sandia National Laboratories and the National Atomic Museum Foundation, a 501 C3 non-profit organization.
