College Financial Aid World's largest scientific society seeks minority students for scholarship program. The American Chemical Society is accepting applications for its 2002 Scholars Program. The program supports academically accomplished African American, Hispanic and Native American students in pursuit of undergraduate degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, environmental science, and related disciplines in two-and-four year college and university programs.

Diversity Initiatives Each year the Department of Defense recognizes its outstanding Disabled employees during its annual Disability Forum in Washington, DC. The Department of Defense's Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program provides the necessary equipment that these employees need to excel at their positions.

University Leadership Derrick E. Scott is the Director of the Minority Engineering Program Office (MEPO) at the University of Michigan. Through his commitment the MEP0 continues to break records in the number of minority students receiving B.S. Engineering Degrees at the University.

Industry Briefs

Communication Forefront Breaking the glass ceiling, Lucent Technologies has named Janet F. Russo its new President & CEO. Janet was one of the original-founding executives of the company in 1996. Lucent Technologies is headquartered in Murray Hills, NJ.

Scientific Outlook 2001 was a year of great challenges and successes for the National Aeronautical and Space Administration. The Agency went through its first leadership change in ten years, as Dan Goldin stepped down as NASA Administrator in November of 2001. NASA's Mars Program rebounded in 2001with the success of the Oddessy Spacecraft achieving Martian orbit after a 286 million-mile journey.

Technology Advancements The hand held computer is revolutionizing the computer industry. These mini wireless computers can be found in use by educational institutions, industry employees, colleges, industry employees, law enforcement and government agencies. Software being developed by top companies is allowing these small computers to be usable anytime, anywhere.

Automotive Innovations General Motors has introduced its next generation vehicle, the Autonomy. The futuristic car features a seamless base chassis that enables its owner to switch the upper half of the vehicle out with other interchangeable halves. The Autonomy is hydrogen powered and does not need oil or gasoline.

Federal Government

Armed Forces A diverse cadre of military members stands ready for the 21st century. Men and women from majority and minority racial and ethnic groups train and perform their duties within a multitude of occupational specialites, so as accomplish military missions, on land, at sea, and in the air.

Research Laboratories The U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory will host a Technology Demonstration Day on January 29, 2002 to open a venture development competition for university students. The competition, open to teams of students from universities nationwide, asks the students to develop plans to commercialize one of the new technologies being researched at Argonne.

Federal Agencies The Central Intelligence Agency has a special branch of operations named the Directorate of Science and Technology. Donald M. Kerr is the current director of the Directorate of Science and Technology. The DST's main role is to create and apply innovative technology in support of intelligence collection missions.
