Sandia National Laboratory

Sandia is a national security laboratory operated for the U.S. Department of Energy by the Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Co. We design all non-nuclear components for the nation's nuclear weapons, perform a wide variety of energy research and development projects, and work on assignments that respond to national security threats - both military and economic. We encourage and seek partnerships with appropriate U.S. industry and government groups to collaborate on emerging technologies that support our mission.

Sandia has served for more than 50 years as one of the major national defense R&D labs, starting in 1945 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as part of the Manhattan Project, which built the first nuclear weapons. AT&T began managing Sandia in 1949 after President Harry Truman offered the company "an opportunity to render an exceptional service in the national interest." In 1993, Lockheed Martin (then Martin Marietta) assumed management of the Labs.

Today Sandia has two primary facilities, one in Albuquerque and one in Livermore, California. We employ about 7,450 people and manage about $1.4 billion of work per year.

We are funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy to design all of the non-nuclear components of the nation's nuclear weapons. We also work closely with many U.S. government and industry groups to make contributions to preserve the nation's security. We constantly explore new opportunities to team with government, industry, and university partners in this mission. Sandia pursues "science and engineering with the mission in mind" - finding solutions to the nation's most challenging problems.

Sandia's Albuquerque, New Mexico, site (Sandia/New Mexico) is home to approximately 6,600 technical and administrative employees. This site has various laboratories and is Sandia's headquarters. This is the place to get information if you plan to visit us.

Most Sandia facilities are not open to the general public. We do, however, offer a general orientation tour of the Labs, which includes a video overview, a tour of the Solar Thermal Test Facility, a "windshield tour" of other facilities, and a stop at the National Atomic Museum.

Sandia National Laboratories, working with Technology Ventures Corporation (TVC), the City of Albuquerque and several landowners, is planning a 285 acre, campus-style technology center. The Sandia Science and Technology Park (SSTP), located adjacent "next generation" technology community.
