The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications from highly-qualified individuals for tenure track appointments at either the Associate Professor or Professor level. The positions require an earned doctoral degree in biomedical engineering or related physical or biomedical science. Candidates must be committed to developing a robust, extramurally funded research program, teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and involvement in service activities to the University and the profession. The successful candidate must have strong communication skills and be able to collaborate with colleagues and participate in ongoing departmental programs. Rank and tenure status are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Candidates for senior level appointments must demonstrate evidence of high research productivity, a dedication to graduate and undergraduate education, sustained extramural funding and a national reputation for scientific excellence.
The BME Department at UAB offers degrees at the BS, MS, and PhD levels. The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is in the School of Engineering, which also includes Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. UAB is a major research university and academic health center that discovers, teaches and applies knowledge for the intellectual, cultural, social and economic benefit of Birmingham, the state and the nation. The UAB faculty is renowned for its excellence in interdisciplinary research programs.
UAB includes 13 schools: Engineering, Business, Arts & Humanities, Education, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Nursing, Health Professions, Public Health, and the Graduate School. The University and health system occupy over 85 city blocks in the heart of vibrant downtown Birmingham with many new buildings under construction and others planned for the near future. UAB has 2,212 faculty and 17,591 students. The student body includes 11,284 undergraduates of whom 30% are underrepresented minorities and more than 60% are female. The University’s annual operating budget is approximately $2 billion.
The BME department consists of 16 tenure-track faculty (5 Assistant, 7 Associate and 4 Full Professors), three research faculty members, and four full-time administrative professionals. The department administers academic programs leading to the Bachelor’s of Science in BME, a Master’s of Science in BME and the PhD degree. The BSBME degree was accredited in 2007. Currently, the department has 30 graduate and 115 undergraduate students.
The BME faculty has developed a strong record of extramurally funded interdisciplinary research with emphasis in the areas of cardiac electrophysiology, biomaterials, biomechanics, biomedical implants, biomedical imaging, computational biology, tissue engineering & regenerative medicine. In 2007, BME faculty members were awarded over $2 million in extramural funding. Faculty members in the BME department collaborate with colleagues in Dentistry, Engineering, Medicine, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics. Many BME faculty members are involved in UAB’s newly established BioMatrix Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (BERM) research center. The BERM Center is a university-wide interdisciplinary developmental research center that encompasses faculty and research programs from the Schools of Engineering, Dentistry, Medicine, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Business. The major focus of the BERM Center is to facilitate development of interdisciplinary research and training programs in the areas of tissue regeneration and repair by development of scientific expertise in the biology of the cellular microenvironment, adult stem cells and their niches, nanostructured matrix scaffolds, 3-D tissue construct development, and tissue bioreactors and translation of these approaches to novel therapies, cell-based treatments, tissue replacement products and technologies . It is expected that successful candidates will make significant contributions to the BERM Center.
Although candidates with expertise in orthopedic biomechanics, biomaterials, cardiovascular biology, extra-cellular matrix biology, stem cell biology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine are preferred; all areas of biomedical engineering will be considered. New faculty hires will occupy lab space in the recently completed Shelby Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research building, which is the home of both the BME Department the BERM Center. More than 45,000 square feet of state-of-the-art research space is available in the Shelby building for heightened collaboration between engineering, medicine, dentistry and biomedical sciences at UAB.
